What Is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. It can be triggered by repeated sun exposure, natural skin aging, drastic hormonal shifts and allergic reactions. Hyperpigmentation can make a person look older than they actually are by making the skin look dull.

How do I fight Hyperpigmentation?

There are many treatment options when it comes to fighting hyper pigmentation. The most common that doctors recommend is Hydroquinone Lighting Cream. This prescription medication has to be taken in cycles. Usually 3-4 months on, then 3-4 months off. Most clients who have used this topical lightening cream will see the pigment come right back after you discontinued its use.

Another option is Chemical Peels. We believe chemical peels are great to brighten the skin. However, it will take too many chemical peels over a long period of time to deliver a dramatic improvement.

At Novak Laser Boutique, our focus is on correcting what is causing the inflammation, reason why we choose Laser Treatment over Hydroquinone creams and Chemical Peels.

Elos PhotoFacial uses combined Intense Pulsed Light and radiofrequency. Unlike other lasers, with an ELOS Photofacial, the visible light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the skin’s surface, while the RF energy stimulates the production of collagen (which supports the skin) from within. Most clinics use IPL procedures that utilize only optical energy (IPL or laser) without the added benefits of radio frequency to stimulate collagen. By combining RadioFrequency and Intense Pulsed Light into one Elos Photofacial treatment, you will achieve the optimal degree of enhancement to all components of your skin.

Is it safe?

ELOS is one of the safest technology available with high patient comfort. Most people experience no side effects at all. Treatment requires no downtime and you can return to work immediately after.

Wearing sunscreen is a must. The sunscreen must be “broad spectrum” (i.e. it blocks both UVA and UVB). A single day of excess sun can undo months of treatment.
